The red space represents the excess, relentless and unrestrained scourging Christ received at the hands of the Romans, who neither followed the Law nor respected human dignity. The white is what was allowed; the red, what was inflicted. Together, they speak of both legal restraint and brutal injustice, yet more deeply, of Christ's willing endurance beyond what was required.
